Grouping to brothers Daun Rice and Vaughn Rice.  Both were in Company H, 504th PIR.
Vaughn Rice enlisted 2-18-42 and was discharged on 6-19-45
Daun Rice enlisted 9-28-42 and was Killed in Actionon 9-26-44

Vaughn was in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany.
Daun was in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium, and Holland.  He was KIA on 9-26-44 on "Operation Market Garden"

Daun was originally in the 505th PIR, but transfered to his brothers Regiment while in North Africa.

Daun won the Bronze  star for his actions on the Waal River Crossing.  September 20, 1944.  He wrote about the crossing in his diary which is pictured above.  This is the entry from the diary:

Sept. 20.  moved out early by Eng. Trucks. Might have been strafed by German plane had they seen us.  Moved to new area S.E. of Nijmegen.  Moved out again for river crossing at 1030 by foot.  Arrived behind the dykes near a factory - got the canvas boats ready for crossing.  Crossed river ar 1600 under heavy fire of all kinds.  Only protection after crossing- small ditches- a dyke 800 yds. ahead.  Later learned that T/5 Dixon killed in boat on crossing.  Tague wounded - others I can't remember, Rigaporulous & S/Sgt. Allen killed.  Fighting here was close & terrible. Seen Dan for the first time at rail road bridge - He and I & six or seven (Haas) others there first. - killed &  captured app. 25 Ger. there.  British tanks started across high way bridege & relieved the pressure - we then moved off to the right for rest.  There were many incidents of great individual bravery that will be lost forever here.  Some day I'll try and put this in detail.

This was Daun's last entry as he was killed 6 days later.

The citation for the Bronze Star (originally submitted for Silver Star) reads as follows:

Under the provisions of Paragrpah 8, AR 600-45, as amended, it is recommended that Sergeant Daun Z. Rice, 15332424. Company H, 504th Parachute Infantry, be awarded the Silver Star. (Posthumously)

DAUN Z. RICE, 153324241, Sergeant, Infantry, United States Army, For gallantry in action on September 20, 1944, about one-half mile North of Nijmegen, Holland.  Sergeant Rice, a squad leader in Company H, was in the leading elements which made the assault across the Waal River, west of the main bridege at Nijmegen. Upon gaining the North Bank of the river, Sergeant Rice speedily organized his own squad together with members of  other units and led them across a 600 yaed stretch of open terrain toward his company's objective which was the North end of the bridge.  in spite of the fact that he and his squad were subject to a withering hail of enemy small arms, machine gun, and mortar fire, Sergeant Rice by his own exemplary conduct and exhortations led his men to the high ground overlooking their objective.  There the unit was pinned down by fierce enemy machine gun fire coming from the bridge 200yds to their front.  Sergeant Rice, realizing the desperate plight of his unit, unhesitatingly and voluntarily seized a BAR from one of his men and, exposing himself deliberately to the enemy fire, worked his way arond to a position on their flank from whihc he was able to deliver effective fire.  This flanking fire forced the enemy to withdraw and enabled the remainder of his men to overrun and hold their objective.  The cool courage, unselfish devotion to duty, and brilliant leadership displayed by Sergeant Rice who later gave his life in another typically gallant action will long serve as an inspiration to the remaining members of his Company and reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army which he so faithfully served.

The grouping includes the items above along with some other photos and other material.
